Real Yoga, For Real People!
Meet Helen, one of our founding members here at Yoga with Soul Bridgend.
Joining the tribe in May 2017 (right from open day!) Helen came to yoga with no previous experience save for a couple of classes many years ago, and has been attending at least three classes a week for the past two months!
We asked Helen if she’d mind telling us about her practice, and whether she’d noticed any changes in her life since starting up. Here’s her mini interview with Jake, one of our teachers:
J: Thanks for speaking to me after class Helen. Do you think yoga has made a difference in your life?
H: Yes. Definitely. There’s two sides to it. On a physical level, I was advised by my physio to take up yoga to improve the way in which my back muscles move and the overall flexibility of my body as I have some muscular problems with my back. Added to that I’d say that I have poor body and core strength, which is a factor in my back issues – yoga has helped me so much with all of this!
Mentally speaking, on a personal level I’ve had a difficult few years. I’m now a single mother of two, who works full time and doesn’t have any “me time” to speak of. Yoga gives me the chance to take a moment and to focus on enjoying the here and now, without the hectic hustle and bustle of life. By taking the time to focus on my practice, I genuinely feel like I have a calmer and much more positive outlook on life.
J: That’s awesome. Is there anything you particularly like about yoga classes at Yoga with Soul?
H: I feel that everyone who attends class has a very positive and friendly nature, which creates a really great social atmosphere. It’s really welcoming. The teachers are really encouraging! They adapt the poses to your own capability so that you get the benefit of the pose no matter where you are with it.
J: Is there anything that you think yoga has taught you in particular? One biggest lesson maybe?
H: I’ve learnt that it doesn’t matter if you make a mistake with the poses or struggle with something in the class. What’s most important is putting the practice in, and seeing how you feel after a class. I always feel so much better after class than before, even it’s been challenging!
J: Would you recommend yoga to your friends?
H: I do all the time! I have found that it has helped me to relax and feel freer to enjoy the moment. A lot of my friends have commented on the difference they have seen in me since I started classes!
J: That’s so great to hear! Would you say there is a mantra that you’ve developed, or maybe a catchphrase?
H: Yes – “Bring on the happiness and the calm! Stay positive!”
And we couldn’t agree more with Helen!
